Wanting to teach Pilates is a wonderful goal — yet the path toward it is often less clear than it should be. In this guide we explain what it really means to become a Pilates teacher.

What it means to be a Pilates teacher

A Pilates teacher is not just someone who knows a set of exercises. They are a movement guide who can read a client’s body, adapt the exercise to their needs and guide them safely — whether it’s a beginner, an athlete, or someone returning to movement after a longer break.

Quality education therefore doesn’t rest only on memorising exercises. It rests on an understanding of anatomy, movement biomechanics, the principles of the method and, above all, on pedagogy — the ability to pass all of this on. It is this depth that builds trust between a teacher and their clients.

What NPCP certification is

NPCP — the National Pilates Certification Program is an independent certifying authority accredited by the NCCA (National Commission for Certifying Agencies). It awards the Nationally Certified Pilates Teacher (NCPT) credential to teachers who demonstrate that they meet an internationally recognised professional standard.

Not every education carries the same weight. That is why we chose to partner with the Pilates Education Institute and the NPCP certification. Put simply: a certificate that holds value beyond Slovakia’s borders.

What comprehensive certification means

In the Pilates world, a distinction is made between Mat certification and comprehensive certification, which covers the full classical repertoire — both the mat and all the apparatus. A comprehensively trained teacher works across the entire range of apparatus and uses the method to its full potential.

The classical comprehensive repertoire includes the Mat, Reformer, Cadillac (Trapeze Table), Chair, Ladder Barrel and Spine Corrector, as well as props such as the Magic Circle. We dedicate a separate module to each of them — below you’ll find what they bring.

What it looks like in practice

The path to earning a Pilates teacher’s certificate is systematic, progressing from the fundamentals to advanced topics. The programme is built from interconnected modules:

▸ Anatomy — the theoretical and practical foundation for safely leading lessons

▸ Pre-Pilates — fundamental movement patterns and the six principles of the method (concentration, control, centring, precision, flow, breath)

▸ Mat Pilates — the complete repertoire of mat exercises, with an emphasis on pedagogy

▸ Magic Circle — working with a light prop for gentle resistance and deep-muscle activation

The comprehensive programme then continues with work across the full range of apparatus:

▸ Reformer — the flagship apparatus of the Pilates method; versatile spring-resistance work for whole-body strength, control and precision

▸ Chair — a compact yet demanding apparatus for stability, strength and functional movement

▸ Ladder Barrel and Spine Corrector — mobility, range of motion and work with healthy spinal curvature

▸ Cadillac (Trapeze Table) — an extensive repertoire of exercises with springs and a bar for a wide spectrum of work

The training also includes observation hours, your own practice and watching experienced teachers — because you only learn to lead a class by actually leading classes. The journey culminates in final preparation for the NPCP certification exam.

Two levels, one path

The Mat Course is the foundation of the Comprehensive Course. You can begin with mat certification and continue toward the comprehensive NCPT certification later. The programme runs in weekend modules from September 2026 to May 2027 at Fitlates Academy, Na Riviére 2, Bratislava. In addition, practical hours take place during the week, which you can also attend online.

Each module can be taken separately; to obtain certification you must complete all the required modules. For those who have already completed a module at another studio/school, we offer the option of recognising that prior education. The programme includes 4 hours of your own practice per week with a teacher. Instalments are paid from August 2026. The minimum age to take part in the training is 18. Frequently asked questions

Do I need previous Pilates experience?

It isn’t a requirement. However, your own experience with the exercise is welcome — it will help you better understand what you’ll later teach.

How long does it take to become a teacher?

The programme runs from September 2026 to May 2027 in weekend modules. The Mat Course (180 hours) can be taken on its own; the Comprehensive NCPT programme is 520 hours. It also depends on the pace at which you complete your observation hours and exam preparation.

Is the certificate recognised?

Yes. NPCP is an independent certification accredited by the NCCA and internationally recognised within the Pilates community, by employers and studios, and in related fields.

How do you differ from other courses in Slovakia?

We are the only comprehensive Pilates teacher-training programme in Slovakia leading to NPCP certification — we cover the full classical repertoire, including all the apparatus.

Can I teach abroad after the course?

NPCP certification is internationally recognised, which opens doors beyond Slovakia too.
